Simply put, it is not really Half-Life 2. The levels aren't remotely the same and don't even play the same. It doesn't look, sound or feel like it in any way. It's a completely different experience which should be judged on its own terms but never regarded as superior in any way to the original.
I would be extremely grateful if someone did that, Half-Life is in dire need of a chapter select. It's too much work for me to type in multiple console commands, and I don't feel like loading up other people's saves, since the "load game" system is just a mess, in my opinion. EP 2 doesn't have an equivalent to Half-life 2 update because the whole point of Half Life 2 update is to make use of special visual enhancements that are already present in EP 2. Now, Half-Life 2. Just so you know, combat is really good, movement not so. You'll need patience. Use these two basic mods for improved graphics and gameplay in HL2 and both episodes: Half-Life 2 Update and MMod. You can follow this guide if you need help. BTW, you can skip the "Source SDK 2013 Singleplayer" step.
