I have since learned that the fix is to add a metric boatload of waypoints to my tracks. Is there any way to auto-generate waypoints along the track line between two existing waypoints that follows the trail line instead of line-of-site? I keep seeing people pointing to GPSBabel (but that only does line-of-site) or suggestions to manually add

The "real" way to do this is to bring up the map at explore.garmin.com so you can visualize the waypoints. Involves making both waypoints (in the Library) and the specific collection containing the waypoints visible on the map.
After checking the gpx file output by Sunnto App, it's figured out that Suunto uses the tag to classify (WayPoints), while most other applications use the (Symbol) tag. Normally, apps give default attributes to data that lacks uncritical properties, but Suunto has apparently chosen to just discard them.
